Following God Isn't the End of the Struggle W/ Sin and Trust

Gen 11-20 It's extraordinarily difficult for human beings to do things God's way. We want to be Him, the top dog in our life, for one; buck against His authority, for another; and can't get away from our sinful nature, for a third. From people's building a tower to try to establish themselves as the heighth of the world, to Abraham's faithful following of God's call only to struggle w/ trusting God to fulfill His promises, and dealing w/ fear, immorality, and jealousy, these ten chapters of Genesis all too sadly reflect where mankind is at even today. The world insists God cannot exist, we are all that is, and life is random. Sometimes these thoughts are motivated by anger at seeming injustice, many times it's dislike of having Someone else in charge. To both I say, the story isn't over yet. If you want to know the end, read God's Word.
As Christians, we similarly to many unbelievers and, like Abraham, don't like to see God act in a way contrary to our desires, our vision. Why did God make Abraham wait so long to have one son when he was supposed to be the father of many nations? God calls upon us to trust Him and He refuses to do it our way. He wants what is best for us, yes, but what we desire for ourselves so often doesn't really seem to be what is best nor do we clear-sightedly view His way and work.
We are sinful, even as believers. Abraham lies repeatedly about his wife; he, like Adam, follows his wife's bad advice, and sins. Abraham goes to Hagar to try to make the child God seems so slow to give. Lot battles Abraham, vying, competing w/ him for the best land, for the most riches, and ends up w/ nothing, destroyed by evil and punishment and violated by his daughters. Yet God is gracious to him in sparing his life, unlike those of many others.
Do we lie, do we fear, do we choose our own way, do we compete and focus on worldy gain, ignore, accept, or even participate in immorality? Yes, sometimes we do. Sometimes I do. Often I do. I'm especially convicted by much I watch on TV or read that tries to urge me to hunger after possessions, after superficial beauty, to admire those who have pretty shells, but are so empty inside. I cannot completely get away from these influences and still be a part of the world where God has placed me to be a light, but I can limit them and I can filter them carefully through the standard of God's Word. I also struggle w/ comparing myself w/ others, wanting to have/be as much or more as they. It's certainly not an attitude God has called me to.
Let me be filled up by you, God, and help me to offer to others this joy as well, through you alone.
